Regional meetings are taking off!

After a lapse of a few years, since Covid restrictions put a stop to regular in-house meetings, we’re happy to report that regional Angela Thirkell Society meetings are becoming a regular feature once again.

In August the Midlands group met in Cheltenham to discuss Wild Strawberries, and enjoy a shared lunch, the odd sherry and many snipe flights! We were set some thought-provoking questions to keep us, as far as is possible, on topic, but the discussion was wide-ranging and raised almost as many questions as were answered.

Our next meeting will be in Stone, Staffordshire, at the end of October (2024). Our host for the day has chosen Summer Half, which was enthusiastically received by the group members – as though we needed an excuse for a second (or third, or fourth…) reading.

Early September saw the first meeting of the Southern group, held in Salisbury. The book under discussion was High Rising and the group has set its sights on reading through the entire Barsetshire series in order. Wild Strawberries will be next, at the March 2025 meeting. The location is yet to be confirmed but may be closer to London this time.

For Southern, Northern, and Midland region Angela Thirkell Society meetings, geographical location is less important than willingness to travel to the venue. All members are welcome to take part in these friendly, informal gatherings. Check the back of the latest ATS journal for group contact details, or get in touch with a committee member if you might be interested in hosting a meeting. Don’t worry about catering, lunch is a shared event (and is always excellent).

It’s so good to be able to get together again: somehow it’s harder to discuss a book when talking to your computer. If there is enough demand maybe we could get a group together focusing more on the north-west or north-east.

Hello Kathleen, nice to hear from you. There’s certainly a Northern group. We can’t give out contact details to non-members, but if you agree I can pass on your email address to the Northern region organiser. Hopefully she’ll be in touch with you regarding their plans. As ever with these things – the more the merrier!
